Byrnes celebrates Homecoming; Romps Riverside

DUNCAN — Byrnes’ 1980s-themed football media guide featured the classic Nintendo game “10-yard Fight” on its cover for homecoming against Riverside on Friday. The Rebels averaged nearly 10 yards per play in a dominating win.

Byrnes dispatched of Riverside 54-0 despite a flurry of first-quarter penalties and a handful of Rebel miscues.

“Obviously we needed to clean some things up, but I’m just proud that we stayed focused,” Byrnes coach Reggie Shaw said. “Homecoming week it’s hard to stay focused. I felt like our offense executed pretty well overall and defense came to play and special teams were pretty good as well.”

Byrnes dominated in total offense 450-37 and allowed just four first downs in the first half to the visitors, with two of those coming on roughing-the-kicker penalties.

Rahjai Harris rambled 28 yards for a touchdown on the third play from scrimmage for a 6-0 lead 35 seconds into the game. Quarterback Lawrence Scott scrambled 16 yards on third-and-15 on the next series for a first down to set up a 9-yard touchdown pass in the flat for Kris Byrd to make it 12-0.

But when the passes weren’t clicking early, Byrnes relied on its efficient ground game.

“Every week you’ve got something to work on,” Shaw said. “We didn’t have to throw it. If we can have success running the ball, we’ll run it every chance you get.”

Julian Martin had 102 yards on 12 carries and a touchdown in relief of Harris, who left early with a bruised shoulder but should be fine, Shaw said. Halfback Kris Byrd caught two red zone touchdown passes for the Rebels.

“He’s like one of those hybrid guys who can play tight end or receiver,” Shaw said. “He’s a load. We’re glad he’s on our team.”

In the second quarter, Byrnes pulled away. A 22-yard Braylin Johnson punt return gave the Rebels the ball at Riverside’s 38. Martin then carried four times for 37 yards on the drive, including a 3-yard run to make it 19-0.

Johnson caught a 13-yard touchdown pass from Scott early in the second quarter. And when Nijae Crouch picked off a Riverside pass along the near sideline and returned it 40 yards for a touchdown for a 33-0 lead, the rout was on.

Scott found Byrd for his second touchdown on the next drive to make it 40-0, and a Zy Webster fumble recovery on the Warriors’ next drive set up a 15-yard touchdown run, the first of two for backup quarterback Brayden Blackmon.

A scary moment shortly before the score quieted the crowd when a Riverside player was carried off the field after a collision with a Byrnes player. Rebels players knelt at midfield while the player was looked at by Shaw and medical personnel.

“He’ll definitely be in our thoughts and prayers,” Shaw said.
