Caden Gore didn’t know what lacrosse was until seven years ago.

On Wednesday – after a five-year career at Byrnes – the senior signed with Coker College to play the sport he’s grown to love.

Gore was one of three Rebel athletes to sign at a ceremony in the District Five Performing Arts Center on the Byrnes campus.

Jonathan Roberts signed to run cross country and track at Anderson University and Trevor Linaman signed to play baseball at Erskine College.

Gore, who also wrestles, came across lacrosse by chance through a friend.

“I picked up a stick at a buddy’s house and that’s how I got started,” he said. Last season, Gore had 11 goals, three assists, an interception and a takeaway.

“He’s constantly asking questions,” Lacrosse coach Frank Quaranta said. “He spends a lot of time in the offseason working on the game. Obviously, it’s paid off for him.”

Roberts will be running cross country and track for Anderson University next season. The homeschooler was a member of the Rebel 4×800 team that finished state runner-up last season. It was an integral part of Byrnes winning the 5-A state track championship last spring, coach Kevin Wyatt said.

“He’s very focused and determined,” Wyatt said. “He’s very methodical. He always knows what he’s going to do.”

Roberts took that approach to his collegiate search as well. He liked what the Trojans offered.

“I like campus and the academic programs they had to offer,” he said.

For Linaman, the campus community was important as well. Linaman loved the energy of the baseball team and coaching staff, but he loved how everything at Erskine was a community-oriented.

“You’re not going to get left behind in the classroom or the baseball field,” he said.

Linaman has been clocked as high as 87 miles per hour on the mound. For the Byrnes baseball team, Linaman is a righty reliever. For his travel ball team, the senior is a middle reliever and a starter.

The latter track is the one Linaman expects at Erskine and Rebels coach Michael Maus talked about his upside in that regard at the ceremony on Wednesday.

“He’s got a huge upside,” Maus said. “He’s at least 6′4. He’s a very hard worker. I’m really, really excited for him. The sky’s the limit for him, obviously. He has the physical attributes. He just has to keep working harder and harder.”
