Yesterday was a great day to showcase our AVID program! Ms. Andrea McMahan, AVID Program Manager, and Ms. Jean Brewington, D5 AVID District Director, toured our campus and had the pleasure of witnessing the outstanding work happening in our school every day.
Our visitors had the opportunity to experience several classrooms in action, observing firsthand the dynamic learning environment and strong student engagement that define our AVID program. They were especially impressed with the warm, welcoming, and collaborative culture at BHS, noting that it’s clear our staff is making a positive impact on students’ lives.
A special shout-out goes to the following teachers who hosted classroom visits during 3rd and 4th blocks. Here is a sampling of the amazing work happening at BHS:
Mrs. Gilmore’s AVID 3 class: Students worked through their points of confusion in tutorials.
Mrs. Justus’s AVID 4 class: Students explored student loans, fostering real-world financial literacy.
Mrs. Cathcart's English 4 class: Students modernized Shakespeare into contemporary TikTok-style videos.
Mrs. Blackwell's US History class: Students analyzed primary and secondary sources, moved between stations in the hallway, and demonstrated mastery through a writing assignment.
Ms. Sirovatka's SREB Math class: Students collaborated and used technology tools to solve rigorous math equations.
Mr. Proffit's PLTW CIM class: Students wrote code to program machines to carve specific shapes and designs.
Mrs. McAbee's English 3 class: Students discussed, synthesized, and analyzed text using critical reading and annotation strategies.
Ms. Thompson's US History class: Students took focused notes on WWII and the Holocaust, then participated in an engaging collaborative activity.
Mrs. Kuronya's Biology class: Students collaborated on natural selection concepts, completed a common interim assessment, and practiced EOC-style questions.
Thank you to everyone who helped make this visit a success. Your dedication to AVID and to our students is truly inspiring!
